E85 FAQ's

E85 Fuel, What's it all about?

E85 is a gasoline/ethanol blend, typically about 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Ethanol raises octane (up to 108) and resists detonation. E85 also cools intake charge. E85 is roughly 30% less energy-dense than gasoline (gasoline ≈120,000 BTU vs E85 ≈85,000 BTU), so fuel consumption is higher.

Can I use pump E85?

Yes, but test pump E85 first because ethanol content varies. Older vehicles with narrowband sensors typically run on ~80%-88% ethanol. Newer vehicles (2021+ Can Am Maverick X3 and 19+ Polaris XP Turbos) with wideband sensors can accept ~E70-E92. The U.S. DOE allows refineries to produce pump E85 with 51%–85% ethanol. Using incorrect pump E85 may cause drivability issues.

Benefits of running E85

E85 suits high-horsepower, high-compression, and boosted engines. Higher ethanol content reduces detonation risk, allows more aggressive tuning, and cools the intake charge to help prevent pre-ignition.
